Google’s GMail Resists Spam
Many people ask me how to control spam and there are a great many products out there for that purpose. I have decided not to bother with spam anymore. Why? Simple… I let GMail do it for me. I’ve had my email address for over ten years now and I get a great deal of spam on a daily basis (at least a couple hundred per day). I’ve tried a variety of solutions. Some of them worked for a while, but as new anti-spam products are released, spam evolves to a point where the old products don’t work anymore. To continuously battle spam one must continuously improve the methods being used. Unfortunately, I don’t have that kind of time or expertise. I found, however, that Google does. I have a GMail account that I had been using for some time. It doesn’t get that much spam because I generally don’t give it out very often. I found that I can use my GMail account to access my regular email account. GMail processes my regular email account and removes all of the spam. My account is setup to list my regular [non-GMail] account in the ‘from’ box when I write an email, so no one is even aware that I am using GMail. The best part is that GMail filters out virtually all of my spam for me, so now I don’t have to worry about it anymore.
What Size Should My Website Be?
One of the first considerations when designing a website is how wide your website will be. Width is measured in pixels and it corresponds to the resolution of the monitor that the website visitor is using to view the website. The majority of users have their screen resolution set at 1024 x 768. Here is the breakdown:
1. 1024 x 768 - 53%
2. 1280 x 1024 - 23%
3. 800 x 600 - 12%
4. 1152 x 864 - 3%
5. other - 9%
The idea is to create a website where the visitors do not have to scroll sideways. I usually program to a width of 800 pixels, that way, virtually all visitors will see the whole width of the website. It is possible to program the website to automatically be as wide as the resolution in which it is viewed, however, this doesn’t always look good on a high-resolution screen. Another good way to use the entire width of the screen is to program 2 columns, the first being 800 pixels wide and the second 200 pixels wide. Use the second column for ads or pictures, that way the 800 x 600 resolution screen will still see the main content without scrolling while the wider resolutions get to see more than the standard 800 pixels.
